Excel Tip -  Dividing column contents

Have you ever needed to split the contents of one column into 2 or more columns?  Perhaps you have a single column with first and last names entered.  To separate these into 2 columns, follow the steps below.

  1. Select the cell, range of cells, or an entire column that contains the text values you want to divide across other cells. A range can be any number of rows tall, but no more than one column wide.

Note:  There must be one or more blank columns to the right of the selected column or the data to the right of the selected column will be overwritten.

  1. On the Data menu, click Text to Columns.

  2. Select Delimited as the original data type, click Next.

  3. Select Space as the delimiter, click Next

  4. Click Finish.
