Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My phone isn't working. What do I do?
A: Click on Report a Problem which will allow you to alert Computer Services of any problems in your phone service.

Q: I can't make long distance calls. What is wrong?
A: Make sure that you dial 9 + 1 + the area code and phone number. After dialing 9 there will not be second dial tone. This is normal, simply continue dialing as described above and enter your normal long distance PIN # when prompted.

Q: What does "Analog Phone" Mean?
A: This is a "traditional" phone.

Q: Since the voice data is going over the internet, is it as secure as a phone line? What about giving out credit cards numbers, social security numbers, etc?
A: Our phone system uses our on campus network for on campus communication. As for long distance and off campus we have dedicated lines directly to the phone company, so our internet connection is not involved. As for security on or off campus, voice traffic is translated into digital packets and sent on the network. We have all voice traffic on a virtual network. Between the packet structure and the private network it would be virtually impossible to sniff and decode those voice conversations. The “old” telephone system was less secure because it was easier to tap into since it was analog.

Q: Will there be any disruption of the computer network due to the technology?
A: This will not have any affect on the computer network.

Q: Will 911 Emergency calls still work?
A: Yes.

Q: When can I expect to get an IP Phone?
A: Computer Services will be deploying the new IP Phones over the course of the fall semester. However, there is not a schedule of delivery for specific areas available at this time.

Q: Will my fax machine still work?
A: Yes.

Q: I can't get my voicemail to work. What is wrong?
A: Voicemail has not been configured yet. You will recieve an email once voicemail is working.
