Introduction
Ouachita maintains a large stock of
information technology equipment for faculty, staff, and
student use. The
purpose of this document is to help familiarize students
with the available equipment and its location.
Every building on Ouachita’s campus is
connected to a campus wide computer network. Each
office has a network drop and each residence hall room has
two network drops for connecting computers to the campus
network. There is a separate document published by the
Computer Services Department covering residence
hall networking issues.
Every network user is bound by a
Code of Computing Practices. This can be found in the
student Tiger Handbook as well as online. It is
imperative that each student read the document and
understand it before using the network.
Students are assigned a network account
when they enroll in school and keep the account until they
graduate or fail to enroll for 2 concurrent fall/spring
semesters. A network account authorizes the student to
send and receive e-mail, use network resources, and store
files on a network server (optional.) A username and
password for new students to gain access to the
network are issued at registration.
Each computer on the campus network also
has access to the Internet. The University maintains a
firewall to protect the network resources and to filter
pornographic websites.
Each student is allowed to use the
University’s server to send and receive e-mail. The
e-mail address is in the format username@obu.edu
(username is the first 3 letters of the last name and the ID
number). The University faculty and staff use
e-mail to communicate with the students. It is very
important that students periodically check their campus
e-mail for important messages.
Some computer labs are dedicated to special course
work and are not publicly available. The labs listed
below are available at various times. The exact times
are posted in the labs. Every
computer in any lab connected to the network has access to
the Internet. Specific departments are
responsible for staffing the labs with workers, maintaining
supplies, and reporting hardware/software problems to
Computer Services.
Please note: the computers in our
labs are equipped with devices to prevent modification to
the computer setup. When the computer is restarted,
the computer is reset to a default configuration. For
this reason we strongly suggest that files not be saved to
the hard drive (C:) in any lab. Any files saved to the
hard drive (C:) will be lost when the computer is restarted.

There are also public access computers
available for checking e-mail in the Student Center
and Starbucks.
A scanner, color printer, and CD burner for student use is available in
Instructional Media Services located on the first floor
of the library. The computer that the scanner is
connected to is dedicated to that purpose. Using it
for e-mail and web browsing is not allowed. This
computer is connected to the campus network.
There is not a dedicated fax machine for
student use. Various administrative offices have fax
machines that they will allow students to use in special
circumstances.
There are four copy machines available to
the students. One copy machine is located in Evans
Student Center, and three are located in the library.
In order for students to make a copy they must have
purchased a copy card. Copy cards are a method of
prepaying for copies. Copy cards may be purchased in
the Business Office and in the Library. Please note
that once the money value of a copy card is used, more can
be added to the card without having to throw it away and
purchase a new one.
The Computer Services Department provides
support for issues relating to the campus network and
various software packages including Microsoft Office.
Please note: Students in need of hardware repair should
contact a
vendor.
