Wireless Networking Troubleshooting
Many wireless networking
problems can be corrected by checking and modifying a few
simple settings. Some of the most common are:
1.
Incorrect SSID
Every wireless network must
be assigned an SSID. All wireless networks at OBU are
assigned the SSID of "ouachita".
Each card manufacturer's directions for changing the SSID
are different. Please refer to the documentation that
came with your wireless card for instructions on how to
change the SSID. NOTE: Windows XP users will not
have the option of changing their SSID. The SSID in
Windows XP is dynamically detected when you are in range of
an access point.
2.
Wireless Networking Card not installed correctly
To verify that your wireless
networking card is installed correctly first, right click on
"My Computer" and in Windows 95/98/ME click on the "Device
Manager" tab. In Windows 2000/XP click on the
"Hardware" tab and then click on the "Device Manager"
button. A window will open that looks similar to this:

Make sure that your wireless
network card is listed under "Network adapters" and DOES NOT have a Red X beside it.
If a Red X is showing you will need to right-click on the
wireless network card and select either "Reinstall Drivers"
or "Update Drivers". NOTE: Before you click on
one of these options, be sure and insert your driver CD that
came with your wireless networking card.
